Double Final Consonants

This week I'll be teaching Double final consonants, you know like shell, bell, tell, class, pass, boss, call, fall, well you get it. As I was planning for this week I started to look for some activities on Teachers Notebook & Teachers Pay Teachers. No go, then I searched all the blogs I read on Google Reader. Did you know that function is available? It is pretty cool. Still nothing, I even just did a blanket search on Google... nothing. So I found myself singing...

"What would you do if I sang out of tune? Would stand up and walk out on me? Lend me your ear and I'll sing you a song, and I'll try not to sing out of key. Oh, I'll get by with a little help from my friends..." I love that song. I used to love the show too. :)

Anyway, let me get back on track. Does anybody know where I can find an activity, song, unit, word sort, anchor chart something I could use to have my students practice double final consonants?

  1. Check your email, I sent this to you: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Words-With-Bonus-LettersWords-Ending-In-Double-Consonants

We use Wilson Fundations and call the double consonant a bonus letter. There are only a few letters that are allowed to be bonus letters: z, s, f, and l. D as a bonus letter in add does not count for some reason. The program is great, I wish I could help you more, my special ed. teachers that push in are trained in this program.

  2. I was just going to say what Erica said! I taught Fundations last year, although I don't anymore. In Fundations, you line the alphabet up like this:
The last four letters (f, l, s, & sometimes z), are called bonus letters. They are bonus letters at the end of one syllable words with a short vowel sound (like buzz, fuzz, bell, etc.). I hope that helps...let me know if you have any more questions!

  3. I use an anchor chart that says, "Jeff will pass Buzz." Jeff is a boy who is running past a bee named Buzz. I explain that if a short vowel word ends with these four words, then it's doubled. :)

  4. I just posted an idea I got from your comments since I am teaching double letters this week. Come check it out. Hope you don't mind and maybe you can use it!

  5. Just found your blog looking for the samething! I am also an ELL teacher. This is my first year as an ELL teacher and still trying to find materials for my class. I'm sooo glad to have found your blog!

    1. Hi Lorraine,

So glad you found my blog. Also try Lady Bug Teacher Files. She is AWESOME and is also an ELL teacher. :) Feel free to email me should you have any questions. msk1ell(at)gmail(dot)com

  6. Scrabble is probably the most classic word board game and loved by many. Essentially, it’s a crossword style word game, each player has to form words from tiles, which have individual letters printed on a board marked by a grid.
