Science Fair Projects

It's that time of year again. What time you ask? Why it's Science fair time. To be completely honest for me it was actually a few weeks ago, but I have been so busy I've not had a chance to post our projects. I made 2 this year, one for my Kinder kids and a second for my 1st grade tatter tots. A few weeks ago I posted about 3 great resources for science projects. As I went through the books I found several great projects and managed to narrow it down to "Hanging by a Thread" & "Fingerprints: A First Grade Detectives Tale."

Hanging by a Thread
My Kinder Kids got to work with properties of matter and freezing temperatures by combining ice, salt & a piece of yarn. They had a blast.
As you can see it was a success, even if some cheated a bit by almost tying the yarn around the ice cube. When I saw them I just had to sit back & enjoy the ingenuity.

So then we talked about the different parts of our project. I normally have students write out the different sections but we were VERY short on time... I kind of procrastinated. After we discussed what should go in each section I typed it all up. Here is how it turned out.

Fingerprints:
A First Grade Detectives Tale
The First Graders got to work on my favorite project. They studied different kinds of finger prints, then made some of their own and studied/ graphed what type/ kind they are.

Again we talked about the different parts of our project. Then we discussed what should go in each section I typed it all up. Here is how it turned out.

I decided to make this one interactive, I love interactive projects. All I had to do was attached a magnifying glass and posted the students finger prints.

Personally I wish the students had done more of the writing. I guess there is always next year right? So if you are anxious about projects, you might want to take a look at these resources. they helped me a bunch!

  3. Hi neighbor! I'm still working on the technology. I lost a button today and wanted to share that imgur must drop the photos after some time. I saved your code and saved your image. I signed up for an account and will make a few of my buttons again. I've been assured the images will not drop if an accound is created. We can upload your image again when yours goes out. I know you mentioned in previous post that you change up your blog and may wish to make the change at that time. Just know I'm here if you need anything.

  6. I love all the science projects. With these, students and teachers will never have a hard time looking for experimental subjects. Thank you so much for posting!

  7. I loved both projects. Thanks for sharing them.

On entirely different note, I'd love to hear how you develop phonemic awareness with your students. I have many non-English speakers. We will need some intense study in this area. Any suggestions?
